Fences on Slopes

Retaining Walls & Fencing on Sloping Auckland Sections

A large portion of the North Shore sits on slopes. Sections in Birkenhead, Glenfield, Birkdale, and Beach Haven often need a combination of fencing and retaining work - not just a fence run on flat ground. That grade change affects how posts are set, how the fence is profiled, and whether a retaining element is required alongside it.

Retaining walls are a separate structural element from fencing. Any wall over 1.5m requires a building consent and a Record of Work from an LBP licensed builder. A standard fencing company can't legally provide that sign-off. We're licensed to carry out consent-required retaining work and handle the consent process with Auckland Council.

If your section slopes and you're not sure what's needed, the site visit is where we work that out before anything is agreed.

How It Works

How We Run a Fencing & Landscaping Job

Site Visit & Scope

We walk the boundary with you, measure the run, and assess ground conditions. We check for underground services, confirm fence heights sit within Auckland Council's rules, and flag any consent requirements before quoting.

Written Quote & Sign-Off

A written quote with material options itemised. Retaining quoted as a separate line item where needed. We agree on timber, board profile, gate design, and any landscaping elements before work starts.

Build & Walkthrough

Posts set to the correct depth for the ground conditions. Rails, boards, capping, and gates completed to the agreed scope. Landscaping elements done after structural work. Site cleared and walked through with you before we leave.

Worth Knowing

Fence Heights & Auckland Council Rules - What Applies Across Auckland

Auckland Council's rules vary depending on where the fence sits on your property and what zone you're in. For most Auckland residential properties:

Front boundary fencing (facing a road): fences are generally limited to 1.2m without resource consent. Anything higher - including privacy screens at the street edge - requires consent.

Side and rear boundaries: up to 2m is permitted in most residential zones without consent. Above 2.5m generally triggers resource consent.

Retaining walls: walls over 1.5m require a building consent and a Record of Work from an LBP licensed builder - separate from any fence height rules.

Parts of the North Shore including Devonport, Birkenhead, and Northcote fall within Historic Character or Special Character overlays with additional restrictions on materials and design. We check your specific rules at the site visit before anything is agreed.

Material Choices

Fence & Landscaping Materials - What Lasts in Auckland

Tanalised Pine

The standard for residential fencing in NZ. H3.2 for above-ground boards; H4 for in-ground posts - the correct spec for North Shore clay soil.

Macrocarpa & Cedar

Naturally durable, no chemical treatment required. Higher upfront cost than pine, lower maintenance over time.

Treated Sleepers

H5-treated for any in-ground contact. Correctly installed sleepers in a raised garden structure will hold for 20+ years in North Shore conditions.

Composite & Aluminium Screening

Panels that don't warp, don't need painting, and hold their finish in UV-exposed locations. We advise whether this suits the specific site.

Common Questions

Fencing & Landscaping Questions -
Auckland

How much does fencing cost in Auckland?

Fencing cost depends on the length of the run, the timber grade and board profile, the number of gates, and ground conditions - particularly post depth in North Shore clay soil. There's no reliable per-linear-metre figure without knowing what you're building and what the ground is doing. We come to the site, measure accurately, and give you a written quote based on what we see.

How long does a fencing and landscaping job take?

A standard residential fence run of 20–40 linear metres typically takes 2–4 days on site. Jobs with retaining, multiple gates, grade changes, or combined landscaping elements take longer. We give you a realistic schedule at the quote stage - not a best-case timeline.

Do I need a building or resource consent to build a fence?

Usually not for standard residential fencing. Side and rear boundary fences under 2m don't require consent in most residential Auckland zones. Front boundary fences over 1.2m and retaining walls over 1.5m do require consent. Character overlay areas add further rules. We check your specific property's rules at the site visit before anything is committed to scope.

Can you build retaining walls that require a building consent?

Yes. We're LBP licensed, which means we can carry out consent-required retaining work and provide the Record of Work that Auckland Council requires. A standard fencing company can't legally sign off consent-required retaining - it requires an LBP. If your retaining wall is over 1.5m or close to it, we can manage the consent process from lodgement through to sign-off.

Do you build fencing and do landscaping work across the North Shore?

We're based in Glenfield and do most of our fencing and landscaping work across Auckland's North Shore - Birkenhead, Northcote, Takapuna, Milford, Devonport, Birkdale, Beach Haven, and surrounding suburbs. We also cover wider Auckland within roughly 20km of the city centre.
