Material Options

Timber or Composite? Decking Material Choices for Auckland

Treated Pine

The most common decking material in Auckland and the most cost-effective starting point. Treated pine is structurally sound, takes stain and oil well, and is widely available in NZ. It requires oiling or sealing every 1-3 years to maintain colour and prevent surface checking. Without maintenance it greys and eventually cracks along the grain.

Hardwood - Kwila (Merbau)

Kwila is a dense tropical hardwood that weathers more slowly than pine and holds its surface better under foot traffic. It costs more per linear metre, is heavier to work with, and still benefits from oiling - but it's more forgiving if the maintenance schedule slips. If you want hardwood, we advise on what's available at the time of quoting.

Composite Decking

Composite boards - timber/plastic composite or fully capped composite - cost more upfront than treated pine but require almost no maintenance. UV-stable finishes hold colour through Auckland's wet winters and hot summers without annual oiling or staining. The tradeoffs: some composites get noticeably hot in direct summer sun, the look is more uniform than natural timber grain, and they're not suitable for structural framing. Well-suited to decks in full sun exposure or where ongoing maintenance is something the client genuinely wants to avoid.

No universally right answer. For clients who want the natural timber look and are comfortable maintaining it, treated pine is the right call for the budget. For clients who want minimal ongoing work, composite is worth the extra upfront cost. We discuss both at the quote and can price each option side by side so the comparison is real, not theoretical.

Sloped Sites

Elevated Decks on Sloped Auckland Sections

A significant portion of Auckland properties - Birkenhead, Northcote, Beach Haven, Devonport - have rear sections that drop 2–3 metres from the back of the house. That changes how a deck gets built.

Foundations & Posts

On a sloped site, posts are longer and carry more load at the lowest point. Screw-pile foundations are often the right fit - structurally appropriate and less disruptive than excavated pads on a confined section.

Stairs

A significant height change means stairs need planning from the outset - not as an afterthought once the frame is already in. We account for the full stair run early in the design.

Consent

Any deck over 1m above adjacent ground needs a building consent - which on a sloped North Shore section applies to decks that look entirely standard from inside. We identify this at the first site visit.

Structural Engineering

Decks over 3m high or on steep ground may need an engineer's sign-off as part of the consent. We flag this early, before the quote is finalised.

How It Works

How We Build a Deck Across Auckland

Quote & Consent

We visit the section, assess the level change, access, and attachment point at the house. A written quote follows covering framing, decking, foundations, stairs, handrails, and consent costs. Where consent is required, we prepare the application, submit to Auckland Council, and manage inspections through to CCC.

Foundations & Framing

Concrete pads or screw piles installed to spec. Posts set, bearers and joists to span tables, blocking and joist hangers throughout. Weatherproofing detail at the wall-to-deck junction before boards go on.

Decking, Stairs, Handrails & Handover

Decking boards fixed with correct drainage gap - hidden fixings where preferred. Stairs and landings built to code. Balustrade to height and spacing requirements. CCC and record of work issued on completion.

Deck Costs

What Drives the Cost of a Deck
Across Auckland

No set prices - every deck is quoted after a site visit and a scope conversation. These are the variables that move the cost the most on Auckland deck jobs.

Deck Area
The square metreage of decking surface is the baseline - it drives material volume and labour hours. But a small elevated deck on a sloped site with a long stair run and a consent requirement will cost more than a larger flat deck on a level section. Area is a starting point, not the whole picture.
Material Choice
Treated pine is the most cost-effective decking surface. Kwila hardwood costs more per linear metre. Composite costs more again, with the premium varying by brand and product type. The framing is treated timber either way. We price both decking surface options at the quote stage so you can make an informed comparison against your actual budget.
Site Height & Foundation Specification
A deck sitting 200mm above a level concrete slab needs minimal foundation work. A raised deck 2m above a sloped garden requires longer posts, a more substantial foundation system, and potentially structural engineering input. Height is one of the biggest cost variables on Auckland deck jobs - it affects post length, foundation load, stair run length, and the consent position.
Building Consent
Consented decks carry an Auckland Council application fee and inspection costs. We include these in the quote as a line item rather than presenting them as a variation after the fact. Where structural engineering documentation is required for the consent, the engineer's fee is also included.
Stairs & Handrails
These are a meaningful portion of the total cost on any raised deck and are frequently underestimated. A full stair run covering 2m of height change involves a real piece of carpentry - stringers, treads, a landing, and the handrail system to suit. Glass balustrade systems carry significant material cost compared to timber or aluminium. We scope stairs and handrails at the site visit and quote them as part of the overall structure, not as optional add-ons.
Site Access
Tight-access sites - inner-suburb properties with no side-gate access, sections on steep banks, properties with existing structures limiting the working area - take longer and cost more in labour. We identify access constraints at the site visit and factor them into the quote so there are no surprises on the invoice.

Common Questions

Deck Building Questions -
Auckland

How much does a deck cost in Auckland?

Deck costs on the North Shore range considerably - a simple ground-level treated pine deck is a different job to a raised composite deck with a full stair run, balustrade system, and a building consent. We don't publish a ballpark figure because the spread is too wide to be useful. We come to the section, assess what's actually there, and give you a written quote based on real site conditions - area, height, material, stairs, access, and whether a consent is required.

Do I need building consent for my deck in Auckland?

Possibly. The NZ Building Act exempts decks from consent where they're no more than 1m above the adjacent ground at any point. On a level North Shore section, most decks are well under this threshold. On sloped sections - common throughout Birkenhead, Northcote, Devonport, and Milford - the deck surface can exceed 1m above the garden below even when it's directly off the living area. We assess the consent position at the first site visit and give you a clear answer before any scope is agreed.

Timber or composite - which is better for an Auckland deck?

Both work in Auckland's climate. Treated pine is cheaper upfront and looks great when maintained, but needs oiling every 1–3 years to hold its colour and prevent surface checking. Without that maintenance it greys and eventually splits along the grain. Composite costs more to buy but holds its appearance without annual oiling - a real advantage in Auckland's wet winters and hot summers. The right answer depends on your budget and how much upkeep you're willing to do. We price both at the quote so you can compare on real numbers.

Do you build decks outside the North Shore?

We're based in Glenfield and do most of our deck work on the North Shore - Birkenhead, Northcote, Takapuna, Milford, Devonport, and the surrounding suburbs. We also cover wider Auckland within roughly 20km of the CBD, including inner Auckland, parts of East Auckland, and parts of West Auckland.

Can you handle fencing or retaining walls as part of the same job?

Yes. If the project includes boundary fencing, a retaining wall at the base of the section, raised garden beds, or paving around the deck area, we cover all of this under one job scope. See our fencing and landscaping services for the full list of what's included.
